Leading Mitsubishi’s Safe in Libya


The top Mitsubishis supported by Ralliart in this year’s Paris-Dakar-Cairo Rally have arrived safely in Sabha, Libya, ready for the restart on January 17. They include rally leader Kenjiro Shinozuka’s Team Nisseki Mitsubishi Ralliart Pajero/Montero, and the similar cars driven by Jean-Pierre Fontenay, Jutta Kleinschmidt, Hiroshi Masuoka and Miguel Prieto and Mitsubishi Strakar/L200 driven by Carlos Sousa.

The competitors are still in Niamey waiting for the airlift to finish transporting the vehicles and equipment across the border, and are scheduled to fly to Sabha tomorrow, January 16.

So far the airlift, using three giant Antonov 124 cargo planes, has been running smoothly, and the event organisers are confident that the rally will recommence on time on January 17, leaving Sabha for Waw el Kabir, the first bivouac of the second half to which the organisers and press will be flown direct.

The revised total distance remaining in the Dakar 2000 Rally is now 4,079 km with 2,980 km of special stages still to be contested. The new totals for the event have been recalculated at 7,846km overall and 5,018km of special stages.
