J-P. Fontenay
Profile
(Portuguese - Born : 16 January, 1966)
Debuted on the 1989 UMM Trophy of Portalegre. From 1990 to 1992 he continued to compete in the same series and, starting in '90 with a third place in the series went one better every year until he won the championship in '92. In 1993 he was contracted to Nissan, but he signed for Mitsubishi in 1994 and has been a team member of the Portuguese Dealer Team ever since. His record in the domestic and international events he has competed in has been exceptional. 1995 and 1996 saw him compete in the domestic Portuguese championship and post numerous victories in a T1 Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero. He then came third in T1 (Production Car) in the 1996 Paris-Dakar. The following year's Dakar saw him win the category and also come 10th outright, a result that made him the most successful Portuguese driver in the history of the Paris-Dakar. 1998 saw him in a different machine, a T3 (Prototype) Mitsubishi L200 Strakar, and this brought him 2nd place in T3 in the Portuguese national championship. In 1999 he not only scored numerous wins in the domestic Portuguese series, but also beat J-L. Schlesser on the Baja Portugal and thus record his first World Cup victory, and on his home soil, too!
