The famous off-road rally will be running for the 12th time this year. It began in 1991 and was part of the FIA World Cup for the first time in 1993. The route will cross the massive Rub Al Khali Desert (Empty Quarter), which is located along the Persian Gulf coast, through some treacherous desert terrain in the country and close to the border with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The new Pajero Evolution / Montero Evolution was recently unveiled at the 2002 Paris Motor Show and was specifically designed for the classic Paris-Dakar event. The UAE Desert Challenge marks the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution's competition debut.

Mitsubishi's Hiroshi Masuoka, who achieved his first victory on the 2002 Dakar in the Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero, will sit behind the wheel of one of the new machines. Backing him as his co-driver will be Dakar veteran Andreas Schultz.

The second vehicle will be driven by the legendary Stéphane Peterhansel, six-times Dakar winner in the two-wheel category. His co-driver will be Jean-Paul Cottret.

Driving the standard Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero will be the 1998 Dakar winner and long-time Mitsubishi driver Jean-Pierre Fontenay and his co-driver Gilles Picard. The fourth Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero will be handled by Italian Miki Biasion, who was crowned FIA World Rally Champion twice in 1988 and 1989. His co-driver will be fellow countryman Tiziano Siviero.

By gaining valuable experience in the UAE Desert Challenge, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart aims to achieve its third consecutive victory on the 2003 Dakar. Not only will the event give Mitsubishi the opportunity to improve its performance for the 2003 Dakar, but also the same driver/co-driver line-up will enhance Mitsubishi's chances.

DRIVERS
Hiroshi MASUOKA / Born March 13th, 1960

An employee of Ralliart Inc., the Japanese first started off-road racing in 1979 and has since accumulated impressive results in domestic events before debuting in international events. He attempts his first Paris-Dakar challenge in 1987. In 1990 he climbs to victory with an impressive T2 category win (10th overall). After proving that he can handle the Dakar, he finishes 4th overall in 1994 and in 1997 / 1998 he again achieves two consecutive 4th overall places. He took 6th overall in both 1999 and 2000, steadily building a magnificent record in the legendary Dakar Rally. In November 2000 Masuoka went to the Baja 2000, the most famous and toughest off-road event organized in the United States. The off-road event held in Mexico is much different from its European counterparts. Indeed, the Baja 2000 requires that competitors drive their machines over 2,500km non-stop! Masuoka teamed up with 3 American drivers to cross the Mexican Baja California peninsula in a production-based Mitsubishi Montero Sport/Challenger. Masuoka and his team-mates succeeded in taking the Montero Sport/Challenger to victory in class 3I completing the race in a little more than 55 hours, an incredible achievement considering that many doubted they would even finish on their first participation in the Baja. The challenge provided Masuoka with valuable experience for his attempt on the 2001 Dakar in which he finished 2nd overall after a controversial finish. In the exciting 2002 Paris-Dakar, Hiroshi Masuoka kept the pace and stayed on top for 12 straight days subsequently taking his first overall victory on his 15th attempt. In the same year, he entered the Morocco Rally where he finished 2nd overall. The impressive results of his achievement and his growing popularity makes him one of the top rally drivers in the world. Mitsubishi driver Hiroshi Masuoka proudly represents Japan in the world of off-road racing.
