Third-generation PAJERO
The PAJERO transitioned to
a monocoque construction,
establishing itself as a
globally admired all-around
4WD
The first and second generations of PAJERO achieved global success, with 470,000 units sold in Japan
and 1.26 million units across about 170 countries and regions. However, as crossover SUVs became popular for their strong on-road performance, the market began to change.
For the third generation, the challenge was to enhance on-road stability without sacrificing the exceptional off-road capability that defined PAJERO. The aim was to create a genuine all-round 4WD with performance that surpassed crossover SUVs.
After extensive discussions, the development team made a bold choice. Instead of continuing with
the traditional ladder-frame structure, they designed an innovative built-in frame monocoque body
— integrating a reinforced frame into a monocoque construction. This unique design provided the durability needed for challenging off-road conditions while delivering the comfort and stability expected on the road.
Engineering a truly
versatile SUV that

the highest
global standards
Despite its larger size, the third-generation PAJERO achieved significant weight reduction through its innovative built-in frame monocoque body structure. This design not only decreased the vehicle’s weight
but also met its ambitious goal of body rigidity comparable to a Dakar Rally prototype.
The suspension system was completely redesigned, featuring independent double-wishbone systems
at both the front and rear. Additionally, a rear subframe was integrated to provide exceptional on-road stability and outstanding off-road capability.
MITSUBISHI MOTORS’ Super Select 4WD evolved into the electronically controlled Super Select 4WD-II,
which offers variable torque distribution to enhance handling and stability across a wide range
of driving conditions.
Environmental performance was a key focus in the PAJERO’s development. Weight reduction,
along with the introduction of newly developed high-output and fuel-efficient engines,
improved both the vehicle’s efficiency and emissions performance.
The result is a truly world-class all-round 4WD that combines exceptional off-road capability,
premium-car comfort and stability, and forward-thinking environmental performance.
